Poverty is not just for single mothers

Family Inequality

by Philip N. Cohen

Earlier this month there was a funny segment on Fox and Friends where they took seriously a fake social media campaign, supposedly led by feminists, to end Father’s Day. “More of this nasty feminist rhetoric,” and The Princeton Mom (Susan Patton). “They’re not just interested in ending Father’s Day, they’re interested in ending men.”

Then Tucker Carlson jumped in to ask, “Why is it good for women? I mean, there’s a reason there are more women living in poverty now than at any time in my lifetime, it’s because there are fewer married women. I mean, when you crush men, you hurt women.”

His comment is doubly twisted. First, it supposes that the historical rise of single mothers is the result of feminists crushing men (thanks, Hanna Rosin). The decline in marriage is related to the falling economic fortunes of men, especially relative to women…

7-yr-old Girl #Gang #Raped by Three Men in #UttarPradesh

NEWS REPORTS FROM THE 50 MILLION MISSING CAMPAIGN

June 23, 2014, Muzzafarnagar, Uttar Pradesh

A 7 year old girl who had gone to the fields was grabbed by three men and gang raped.  The girl had gone to relieve herself.  There has been a lot of discussion in India about building toilets in villages as a rape preventative measure, so that girls and women will not have to venture out alone into the fields. None the less, the question needs to be asked : why would three adult men attack a child this way?

With A Voice for Men’s conference over, Paul Elam has found a new woman to hate.

Paul Elam: Voice of reason in the gender debate? Paul Elam: Voice of reason in the gender debate?

You’ll all be glad to hear that Paul Elam has returned to normal. Well, normal for him.

After several days of doing his best impression of someone who isn’t a rage-filled attention misogynist, he’s back to his old woman-bashing self. You’ll also be happy to learn that he’s found a brand new woman to hate:  Time reporter Jessica Roy, who is apparently quite stinky.

elamJessica

I’ve heard rumors that most females are stinky, actually.

Roy, who is covering the conference for Time, hasn’t even published her account yet. Her crimes so far? She tweeted some appalling quotes from some of the talks at the conference and made clear that she was not having a good time amongst the assembled assholes human rights activists.  A selection:

95. A Letter to the Lancet: the story of the Medical Association for the Prevention of War

100 Objects

On 20 January 1951, at the height of the Korean War, seven distinguished doctors published a letter in the Lancet expressing concern about the arms race, the impact of arms spending on healthcare (“each pound spent on bombs means … more dead babies now”) and the apathetic drift towards another world war.

Signatories to letter of 20 Jan 1951 in the Lancet Signatories to letter of 20 Jan 1951 in the Lancet

The signatories (Richard Doll, Alfred Esterman, Ian Gilliland, Horace Joules, Duncan Leys,  Lionel Penrose, and Martin Pollock) argued that doctors could use their unique expertise and authority to work towards disarmament:

“We appeal to all our fellow doctors who think there may yet be an alternative to merely providing treatment for casualties ; we ask them to join us, in the spirit of our chosen profession of healing, in doing all in their power to halt preparation for war …”

The letter provoked many responses, to the Lancet

Do Straight People Understand #377 Applies to Them too?

REVOLUTIONS IN MY SPACE: A BLOG BY RITA BANERJI

When I heard the Supreme Court ruling on Section 377 on the T.V., the first words out of my mouth were – “This is unbelievably stupid! This law criminalizes at least 65% of India’s population!”

Why 65% I’ll explain later, but first I want to challenge this idea of ‘gay sex.’ I know there’s been a lot of talk about how Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code criminalizes ‘gay sex.’ But sex, any kind of sex, is an act. It is neither gay, nor straight! What we all need to take stock of is that the specific sexual acts that 377 in its primeval language refers to as “carnal intercourse against the order of nature” and outlaws – that is, anal and oral sex—are practiced by people of all genders and of all sexual orientations.

If oral and/or anal sex between two consenting…
